Planning your spring garden

Spring is right around the corner, can you feel it in the air? The days are growing longer, the daffodils are starting to bloom, and our golden California hills are starting to turn green. It’s time to start thinking about that spring garden if you haven’t already. Below you’ll find a quick outline for planning your garden this spring. It includes where to buy all of the things you’ll need to grow your own.

  1. Write out a list of your favorite spring and summer vegetables. Let it get a little out of control and dream big.

  2. Assess the amount of space that you actually have. You want to understand what your growing capacity actually is.

  3. Cross things off your list that are easy to snag from the farmers market or that you don’t use a lot of.

  4. Check out some companion planing guides online. This will help you to understand what will grow well together.

  5. Sketch out your garden space and start to fill it in. Be sure that you’re giving things enough space and pairing them with plants they do well with.

  6. If you plan to start plants from seed, you will need seed starting supplies. Starting by seed can be fairly tricky if you don’t have the right supplies.

  7. Ensure that you all irrigation pieces, garden tools, and other planting supplies you may need. Sweetland Garden Mercantile and A to Z Supply have needed supplies.

  8. Pick up some garden soil or compost from Vital Garden Supply that you will mix into your garden beds.

  9. Now you’ll need some starts. Our vendors Starbright Acres Family Farm & Fresh Starts Organic Farm offer starts that are locally grown and seasonally appropriate. Starbright is offering pre-order on their website and will be selling starts at market now through the end of June. Fresh Starts offers sales directly and will be at market May & June.

  10. Now you’re ready to plant. You’ll want to pick a sunny and warm day. I think gardening is best done with music and a cup of coffee/tea personally. Through on some gardening clothes and head outside.

  11. Add compost and fork your beds. You want the soil to be nice and fluffy and well mixed. Then, using the garden map you made earlier, tuck your plants into the soil and give them a nice watering to set them in.

  12. Each morning, wander out to your garden to watch them grow!

A big thank you to our sponsors for supplying our home gardeners and small farmers with the necessary supplies to keep them growing. Growing food is a deeply rewarding economically sustainable practice and can be very empowering for the grower. Thank you to Vital Garden, Sweetland Garden Mercantile, and A to Z provide all of the supplies that you need to get growing this year!
